What to Expect

Regardless of where you receive any kind of treatment, you should be able to freely express your concerns to any healthcare practitioner. Beyond information provided in your health history, particulars for the type of therapy you are receiving should be shared openly. For example: If you want an entire massage session to be spent on your back and neck, then you can have that. It is your treatment, so please feel free to ask questions and share feedback.

Therapeutic massage may be painful – learning the difference between releasing pain (beneficial) and having pain inflicted (non-beneficial) is crucial. A trained therapist should be able to determine the appropriate level of pressure to illicit a response from your muscles, but they may also check in with you. Always inform your therapist if the intensity is too great (or too little).

Depending on the form of bodywork you receive, you may remain covered and/or clothed during the entire session. Direct skin contact is not necessary to release pain and stress. Many forms of massage do not require the use of oils/lotions. If the form of bodywork you receive requires disrobing, rest assured that body regions such as the groin and gluteal crease and breasts on females will never be exposed.
