Also referred to as Rolfing, Structural Integration was founded by Ida Rolf, PhD, in the early 1950s. This method of structural work is typically designed around a 10-session protocol.
Each session focuses on a specific region of the body, which acts as a logical building block to the next session. This modality is designed to release shortened and restricted connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds muscles and other tissues throughout the body, restoring length and movement to these regions, as well as promote balanced posture and body awareness.
A typical Structural Integration session can last between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on responsiveness. The patient will need to be disrobed, at least in the region(s) of contact. As standard with any form of bodywork, no private areas or female breast tissue will be exposed.
Because emotions factor into the ways in which we carry our physical bodies and directly affect fascia, emotional releases can potentially occur.
