Reiki originated in India and was rediscovered in Japan in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui before being brought to America by Hawayo Takata in 1938. This modality is designed to balance the energy of the body. This is accomplished by the practitioner’s laying of hands on and/or slightly off the body and channeling energy. The intention is to guide energy throughout the body to regions where it has become blocked, be it by physical, emotional, and/or mental means. This modality is used to treat ailments of all types by moving Ki in the body to areas of discomfort or disease, which will in turn relieve pain and restore function.
Typical Reiki sessions last 30 to 60 minutes. The patient is asked to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing while receiving this form of bodywork. Sessions are typically performed on the table.
